Changes in the economy, nature, production, and society together with increasing scientific and technological
knowledge make demands of transforming school teaching in the field of technology education. Students are highly motivated to work with their hands because they enjoy working with their hands and like the independence and chance for creativity to take route.
It is from this background that Kagadi Institute of Science and Technology organized special training for students so that they can gain additional skills on top of what they are offering.
Over 50 students have been trained in making shopping bags from environmentally friendly materials. The materials are cheap yet yield big profits.
With these skills, students are able to start earning from the sales of crafts which can enable them to raise capital to start their own businesses.
Mr. Mwinganiza Godfrey, the KISTEC Academic Registrar said that training is aimed at ensuring that the students gain a variety of skills for self-reliance.
“ On top of what the student is offering, it is necessary to learn other skills at their disposal so that they can confidently face the world of work. It’s better if a student has the capacity to initiate different income-generating ventures. This creates a flexible environment for our graduates.”
He however noted with concern that most of the students don’t have the capacity to buy materials to start up their small enterprises. He called upon like-minded partners to support KISTEC students with startup kits.
“Our students come from low-income families and therefore require some seed capital. I know there are organizations and individuals out there willing to support some of our students, especially girls so that they can easily practice the skills they have gained. We highly welcome you to work with us as we make the world a better place for everyone. “
